Fair Trade : The Chocolate Value Chain
The abuse of power experienced by many third world workers at the hands of multi-national companies is a controversial issue that many children are completely unaware of. This is especially so for chocolate -a treat that brings joy to the consumer but invariably exploitation to the worker. I have included two resources on this topic for SPHE, both available below.
1. Video : Chocolate Makes the World Go Round (Via Youtube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFYF0XvR-cg) Resource Detail: The video below highlights the issues faced by Cocoa Bean farmers in Ghana, Africa. It also shows the improved working conditions Fairtrade offers lucky farmers of the Kuapa Kokoo Farmers Co-Operative. Teaching Ideas:

2. The Chocolate Trade Game
Resource Detail: This active game is produced by Christian Aid. It is a hands-on way of showing the children the unfair conditions and obstacles faced by cocoa bean farmers. Ultimately, it will lead students to realise that the delegation of profits in the chocolate value chain is unethical and does not reflect the work invested by different parties. Teaching Ideas:
